It all sounds set up ok but have you also set the /etc/oratab flag to 'Y' and the /etc/sysconfig/oracle file contents to 1? (Can't remember the exact details but the file names should be right)

The supplied scripts require these flags to be set in order to activate the automatic startup and shutdown.
