Excuse me, I am confused. I mean, Oracle clients talk to Oracle databases, not BDE and since you specifically mentioned that you installed the Oracle client on a laptop I assume (oh, how dangerous) that you are referring to a situation where you are running your laptop independently of a network.

If you want to run a fully independent system you should be using Oracle Server (You will have to run NT 4 with SP3 or later in order to support Oracle 8 Server). You can have both Oracle Server and Oracle Client software loaded on the same PC with no problems. Assuming Goldmine can talk to an Oracle Server you should be able to get it to talk to an Oracle Server on the same PC without too much trouble.
