ADSM can do regular filesystem backups, so it should be indifferent to whether or not your database is online (cold backup should work fine). It may have special features for facilitating hot backup by interacting with Oracle to put tablespaces into and out of online backup mode in coordination with the backups; ask your rep or check the literature. But cold offline backups should work no matter what.

If you choose to do online backups (and I recommend them), you must archive your redo logs.

I'm not sure what this means. Going to archivelog mode does not require you to do anything to your redo logs. If you're talking about the actual archiving, that is handled by the ARCH process. You will have to give it a destination, and make sure that destination has enough space to handle at least a day's worth of transactions (each log switch is recorded in your alert log, so you can check that for a feel of how many logs you'll go through in a day), unless you can automate the transfer of archived logs to tape to keep the archive destination clear.
