[Q] Connecting to Oracle over Internet

I've been tasked with connecting our web query system (uses Cold Fusion) to an Oracle database, via the internet, that is ~18 hops away (another company). The connection is quite slow.

I can use SQL Plus and select table at a reasonable speed, considering the architecture.

In order to connect to the Oracle Db via our web application, I must use ODBC. Using the web architecture, ODBC, and the 18 hops really break down when I attempt to return 8 10-column records from a two table join (640,000 x 3000 records).

I'm able to return 50 1-column records from a query against a 3000 record table.

Has anyone succuessful used ODBC & Oracle over the net? Does anyone think this is a viable option for us...or do I just need to give up this ODBC crap (please say give it up).

Thanks in Advance!

Andy Carter
