executing commands from oracle?

I was looking for a way to run an executable program from oracle trigger / SQL. I was told that the only two ways to do this are 1. to use a pipe and call the exe through pro C, 2. or possibly to invoke an external procedure (dll) which invokes the exe. Is there no other direct way to do this? Thanks, Khushro
