I've not got much experience with the JDBC driver, but I do know that when SQLNet clients connect to an Oracle listener on port 1521, this is just for the initial connection. The listener then assigns a random port number for the actual communication between the client and the server process. So opening up port 1521 on the firewall is not enough. There are supposed to be some 'Oracle/SQLNet' compatible firewalls, but I'm not familiar with which ones are compatible or how they work. Hope this can at least drive you in the right direction.

Thanks...
