I was going through some manuals explaining features of Oracle 7.3, and I came across this:

ALTER DATABASE CLEAR LOGFILE It is now possible to reinitialize redo log files during recovery. For example: ALTER DATABASE CLEAR UNARCHIVED LOGFILE ’somefile’ UNRECOVERABLE DATAFILE;

What does it mean and what situation will prompt me to take this action? Thanks,
