Embeded SQL and using SYSDATE in a structure

I have an Embeded SQL insert statment that uses a structure for the values of the insert statement, What I wish to do is to pass SYSDATE as one of the entries of the structure.

If I have to get the time using std library functions how can I program it to make sure that the format is correct on different installations (languages!?!)
