Oracle supports hot backups. Turn archivelog mode on and then for each tablespace in turn set the tablespace into backup mode, backup the datafiles, set the tablespace back to normal mode and then after all of the tablespaces have been backed up turn off archivelog mode. See the chapter on backup and recovery in the Server Concepts Manual (I may be wrong on which manual its in since I don't have a set of manuals at home, but ...).
