Super Newbie Question

Hi. I am extremely new to Oracle and have, what I hope, is a very elementary question for this group:
what is the general syntax for outer joins in Oracle?

In other environments I would write something like: "select a.*, b.* from a left outer join b on a.id = b.id" but this does not seem to work for Oracle.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
