VB5 & Oracle & ODBC & RDO & OO4O

Hello all;

        We are developing a project with Visual Basic 5 (Enterprise) on WinNT 4.0 involving very big Oracle databases with SQLNET 2.3.3. We have run several tests on using DAO & RDO with ODBC (both Microsoft & Oracle drivers), and also using Oracle Objects for OLE (v. 2.1.02). We have come to some conclusions of our own, but would like some feedback as to the results of others with the same dilemma. f

        So far we are going with RDO 2.0 & the Oracle ODBC driver (v. 2.0.3.1.1, which is the latest on Oracle.com), but we are not sure of whether we will have full functionality with this format, including stored procedures, locking, cursors and more. We are having some problems trapping multiple-user locking errors, but everything else works well so far (haven't tried stored procedures yet.)

        Here are some more results from our testing: from what we can tell, DAO is much too slow. When using RDO with the Microsoft ODBC driver for Oracle, supposedly it is fully compatible, but it is very slow. With the Oracle ODBC driver, supposedly it is not fully compatible with RDO. Is it? As for the OO4OLE, we just recently got the version with the Data Control, but are wondering if it is worth it to bother testing, since we are developing in a Microsoft environment, and the client environment will also be Microsoft. We want to avoid as much as possible the Microsoft <=> Oracle inconsistencies.

        One final question we have is whether ADO is a viable alternative, or if it is heavily bugged, and where we can get a hold of a trial version.

        If you can help on any or all of these points, or if you have any questions, please contact us. If you are corresponding to this letter after September 1st, 1997, please send to: stephane.nolet_at_dsd.canadair.ca.

        TIA,
