What? I though this argument would have to completely the other way: since most it is read, the RAID 5 write penalty wount be much of a problem. Why pay for extra disks and controlers to do mirroring when the RAID 5 write penalty wont be a concern?

The only reason that I would agree with the vendor in this case is for support. If you don't do what they recommend and it doesn't perform, it's your problem. If you do what they say (even it it's wrong) then the problem stays with the vendor.
