Thousands? At least tens of thousands. Some 20,000 have registered themselves at the Linux Counter. But this is considered to be a small percentage.

Commercial, supported versions do exist. Check http://www.ssc.com/linux/web.html. The Caldera distribution is rather popular. Several commercial applications are supported on Caldera Linux. Notably Wordperfect-6.0, the spreadsheet NeXs, and the MS-Windows emulator WABI. People pay real money for them.

Professional support by third party's is rapidly increasing. In Holland e.g. Reseau is specialised in this.

If Oracle would present a Linux version, it would be wise to limit support to a supported Linux distribution.

I'm afraid phrases like this (*not* from Allen Kirby), puts the Linux community in a wrong perspective. It's not really an encouragement for Oracle or any other commercial application developer...

A better thing to keep in mind for a application developer is that a lot of young system administrators and other professionals nowadays learn a lot from working with Linux, and simply don't want to part with it.
