I have a single Pentium PRO 200MHz server that I built from scratch myself with a 4GB Wide SCSI disk and 128MB of memory (planning to upgrade dual PPRO 200 soon). I have Solaris X86 installed on it running Oracle 7.3.2.1. I have fairly large tables, over million records, serving data to web users. Everything has been working like a charm so far. I think this method gives you the best bang for the buck. You get to use Unix and pay for Intel hardware and if you put it together yourself you save a bundle there also. I think the total cost of my server including all the software was less than $5,000.

Now if Oracle would release a version for Red-Hat Linux, not only would people save more money they would also have a much better OS that beats the crap out of everything else when it comes to performance and reliability.
