Mark, I couldn’t agree more. Sequent’s tag line was “Our business was your success” and for the most part, they meant it. At US West New Vector, we used to joke that they had trucks circling our building 😊. They did some pretty amazing things with that OS and hardware.

Almost as good as Sequent.

But maybe I favored them because if I told Mike Prince I needed something he told Casey and someone like Kevin made it happen and released to Coat before my coffee was cold. Okay, maybe tomorrow’s coffee, but the tape was on United to Boston and either a courier to the bus or Lebanon airport more than once (or to Philly after the data center was moved to Burlington, NJ).

Sigh. Having someone trust you that much was nice. Mike trusted me that it was worth a phone call. Casey trusted Mike that it would make him money and that we wouldn’t squawk if an unintegrated alpha version wasn’t perfect, and at least a few Sequent software engineers would know where it came from and understand how it might be useful.

But that was not just “top.”

I’m happy for Casey cashing out to IBM, but the whole world would have been better with Sequent Unix instead of the plagiarized rebuilt currently dominant OS. The only thing better would have been if DTSS had survived (where I REALLY got to cheat about what I wanted the OS to do and I only had to convince Rudy and Bob!)

Not bitter, them’s just the facts.

Thanks Douglas. Is it a best practice to turn off irix mode when using top?

No it isn't. Irix mode is a homage to Irix, one of the best Unix SYSVR4 versions ever. Irix has given us XFS and OpenGL, among other things. Don't you dare press that "1" key....
