On production auto-extend is prohibited. Full stop.
On staging generally it is turned off.
Test and development it is turned on with the maximum size set to to
half the physical available disk.
Of course I'm old school. I even expect people to trim their emails when
replying. as it shows respect
by not wasting the other people's time
