Hi Mike,
the GIMR database is mandatory with Oracle GI stack version 12.1.0.2. So not really an option to use nor not ( https://blogs.oracle.com/UPGRADE/entry/grid_infrastructure_management_repository_gimr ).

However you can also dump and view the information with oclumon for example (e.g. MOS ID #1952232.1).
