Something I haven't seen mentioned here is that sql server comes with Reporting Services, Integration Services and Analysis Services. I think all these are included at no extra cost so its a fairly comprensive BI solution not just a database.
I haven't really used these myself but I've heard good things about them.
This is probably why sql server is used a lot in datamart/datawarehouse environments.
