A little late ( only a couple months ) on this email, but it seemed interesting enough to reply anyway. :)

We've done this to move a 10g database to Oracle Database Appliance.

Installing the 10g was unnecessary as I recall - we restored the 10g backup on 11g, and applied logs.

When ready, the database was opened with 'startup upgrade' and the upgrade actions were performed.

I can verify the steps if interested.
