Can't you modify the HTML behind the default search so that it points to your local installation instead of defaulting to oracle.com?

Yeah, it's not just you. Sometimes it's down, sometimes it's dead slow.
I stopped relying upon, in the meantime, all the DB doc packages are on our intranet web servers. Thus there's no simple search field, but the master index is quite good.
