My client is running PeopleSoft on single instance database on RHEL4 with 20+GB of Physical Memory with 4 dual core CPUs. When it does payroll processing it does lots of DMLs, and we can see using NMON that "there are parts" of the batch run that the SWAP is being used more than the physical memory..So I believe it is unavoidable to use SWAP.
And RedHat already defined the "recommended partitioning scheme"...
