The problem we are facing is as follows

there is a offline backup and to accomadate this there is 3 steps

1. Bat file that shuts down oracle database call C:\Oracle\Ora9i\BIN\sqlplus.exe "orabackup/<password>_at_DB1 as sysoper" _at_C:\SQL\shutdown.sql
2. Some backup script outside our controld
3. Bat file that starts up oracle database call C:\Oracle\Ora9i\BIN\sqlplus.exe "orabackup/<same_password_as_above>_at_DB1 as sysoper" _at_C:\SQL\startup.sql

Now step 1 works fine as the database comes down. Step 2 works fine as we have been informed that database files are copied. At step 3 the logfile shows "ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied"

I tried connecting as sysdba but end up with ORA-12560 (protocol adaptor error) and the only way to solve this is to restart the service which autostarts the database.
