RE: datafiles on NFS?

We've tried a few of the UNIX NFS implementations with Linux RAC, with the following results:

- Linux NFS Server - CRS fails to start
- Solaris NFS Server - CRS starts, however Oracle does not seem to want to run (we did only nominal testing here, so there could potentially be a scenario where it works)
- OS X Server - Yes, a Mac NFS server seems to work fine for RAC, should you (oddly) happen to have one running around your datacenter.

I know some people have reported success using some vanilla NFS implementations with standalone - iirc, the CRS does some basic NFS sanity checking by trying to open the voting disk with a variety of different flags, and if any of them fail, it promptly shuts itself down. This was a couple of years ago, though, so it could easily have changed. As always, YMMV.

Thanks for the clarification, Mat. I wanted to take back my email right after I sent it when I gave the specific vendor name. The key point that I wanted to make is that generic, out-of-the-box UNIX NFS mount points will not work for an Oracle database.

While I am a huge fan of NetApp, in fairness, there are more vendors that are certified for Oracle NFS than just NetApp. EMC, BlueArc, HP's Storage Gateway (formerly PolyServe), and some others all have certified NFS platforms. Kevin Closson, who worked for PolyServe pre-HP acquisition, has written about Oracle on NFS extensively.

NFS will work only if you are using Network Appliance. Just plain UNIX NFS will not work. You will get a corrupt database.

I've got a 9iR2 database on an AIX server which is currently experiencing some SAN problems. The SysAdmins have indicated that we need to move off the SAN for several days while they address the issue, and has suggested that we relocate the database to NFS in the interim. My preference would be a backup/restore to another server, but we unfortunately don't have any other AIX systems available, and the application has some constraints which prevent us from migrating to another OS at present.

I'm somewhat reluctant to use NFS for Oracle datafiles, largely because we simply haven't done this for any other environments, but I'm not sure that I have many options in this specific case. Is anyone doing this? If so, is there anything in particular that I should be sure to check/address?
