Right, I should have been more clear. You have to register them for *managed* recovery. For non-managed recovery, Oracle can find them *if* name format is appropriate even when they are not registered and you use *automatic* mode (not manual). I said "manual" meaning non-managed which is obviously confusing. Thanks for correcting this.
