Hi,

check the 2nd edition

http://www.amazon.com/Java-Persistence-Hibernate-Christian-Bauer/dp/1932394885/sr=8-1/qid=1171284946/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-2939205-7142447?ie=UTF8&s=books

it should cover Hibernate up to 3.2

Additionally I thing a good knowledge of the CODASYL network model is advantageous.
I found myself re-reading the Bachman's manifest "The Programmer as navigator" when I first time met Hibernate (http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=362534&coll=portal&dl=ACM)
