That would be the inventory I believe.

Where it is stored depends on your system.

On linux (and others) the file /etc/oraInst.loc points to the location of the Oracle inventory.

From there I can see that the file
 /u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/10gr2dev/oraInventory/ContentsXML/inventory.xml contains my Oracle Homes.
