Are you talking about the client-server interface or the application-database interface?

ODBC can serve the same function it has been serving already for your application. In fact, it seems that Microsoft seems to encourage programmers to use proprietary connection methods rather than ODBC.

If an application is being re-hosted today, strong consideration should be given to a web interface. This will provide a lot more flexibility over the lifetime of the application.
