Well those conditions are the most common conditions for backups. All sites I have been usually set a high retention period, at least a month (I cant imagine one would set a one day recovery window). I know someone who didnt know this effect, set a 200GB Recovery Area for a 30GB database and set a 30 days recovery windows, after a week the customer was calling because his database was haging, archivelog destination full for Oracle but the customer thoght he still had 100GB Free since he was checking the freespace at OS level.

The thing is if someone wants to use RMAN + Recovery Area then he should use backup recovery area command to send the backups to tapes or simply forget using recovery area (unless there are smarter ways).
