I would have to say no simply because each core is
sharing the CPU cache and also the bus bandwidth to
main memory. I would have to assume that the two
cores would then be competing for IO for these
resources. I'm sure that a dual core would be faster
than a single core, but I'd still prefer 2 single core
CPU's each having exclusive access to it's own CPU
cache.
Mind you, some of those Sun Niagara 8-core chips
coming out sure seem intriguing.
