Yes we are a site that does just that have the veritas and async io.

Dick, Did you find out what was causing the fail to write?

IIRC, it supports asyncio in file systems when vxfs (Veritas) is used. That's a separately priced option and needs to be sourced separate from the vanilla standard HP-UX. A lot of Hp sites do have it.
