If you want to learn more about deadlocks, review some textbooks on databases. They will help you understand the underlying reasons why deadlocks can occur. Obviously, they will tell you less about how a particular vendor creates an approach that avoids deadlocks. However, until you have a solid understanding of the theory behind deadlocks, you can't judge the merits of a particular database.

   I think it is great that most people on this list don't know that much about deadlocks. This is a testimonial to Oracle's solid design in this area. In other databases, the database designer must be vigilant to avoiding deadlocks.
