I wouldn't think it has to do with "new" or "old" databases. It has to do with the number of archive log entries in the Controlfile [ie if you are using the Controlfile].

I've manually deleted archivelogs and then found the RMAN backup failing because all the file names were still present in v$LOG_HISTORY, the phsyical files no longer existed.
