rman version and catalog should match - no need for the target db. Run 8.1.7.4, 9.0.1 (Portal) and 9.2.0.4 from RMAN 9.2; catalog is 9.2 as well.
Some options with 8.1.7 catalog and RMAN 9.2 were incompatible; don't know from here.

In short: keep rman the same version as catalog
