Even the global_name can be different from the SID and db_name.

Everytime I clone a database from a hot backup the SID name is different but the db_name is the same till I
complete the recovery. Then I change the db_name as well. 9 times out of 10, I forget to change the global_name -- fortunately it doesn't matter as I am not using Advanced Replication. Hemant

Actually folks, we've promogulated this idea that a SID and a database name have to be the same. Nothing could be farther from the truth. In a recent attempt to make a new copy of our PeopleSoft database from a BCV copy I found that you can have a different name for the database from the SID. And wouldn't you believe it, the 9i DBCA supports that idea?? Therefore you could have a SID on empprod and a name of emp_prod with no trouble. Actually I found a good reason to go back to my old methods of using numbers as SIDs. Why, the JDBC driver. SIDs should be NON case sensitive as they once were in SQL*Net V1.

To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L I think it will allow under score as part of SID name but it is not recommended.

To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L What are the restriction in naming an Oracle SID/Database?

  1. Can I have special character in SID/Database name? e.g. Is a SID name 'emp_prod' is allowed? No You can not use spl char's. SID name should be in alpha's.
  2. What is the maximum size of a SID/Database name in Unix?

8 chars

3. What is the maximum size of a SID/Database name in Windows?

8chars

4. Is there any other restrictions?

SID names should be unique.
