My limited experience says it is far better to have the data warehouse on a separate platform, and it looks like that is what you are doing. Eventually you will probably need Oracle Partitioning Option, and you can only purchase that if you have Oracle Enterprise Edition. Past that, you'll probably have to decide whether the platform you select is beefy enough to handle your warehouse.

We are trying to evaluate our choices for a database for a new data warehouse.
We currently have an Oracle 8.1.7.0.0 for production on AIX, another Oracle instance on W2K Server to support EDI and DB2 for WebSphere and Tivoli. The hardware we would be acquiring is probably an IBM x-Series with W2K Server as a platform.
I realize the breadth and depth of this question but if anyone would like to point out papers or books to read/study, or is willing to share their experiences, I'd be most grateful.
