I worked for a plant that was being moth balled. The
systems were almost all shut down except for
accounting, HR and email for the sales force. We
negotiated a contract to maintain these services. A
couple of months later, some work was required on the
accounting system. Their consultant was going to be a
two day minimum plus travel and expenses.
I fixed the problem in an evening, billed them an
outrageous charge for my inconvenience and still saved
them a couple of thousand dollars.
These things can work. Just work out all of the
details and expenses in advance. There is more to
maintaining a database than patches. What about
application support? What about application upgrades
that require DBA support? What about developer
support? What about OS upgrades? Who runs
interference during outages?
