Is there a large cache on the SAN - perhaps it was memory that was written to and not disk? Did you consider not striping the redo on the internal disk?

Cheers,
Craig.

The funny thing is, we just got a Hitachi san raid 5 and I decided to put the redo logs on 5 striped internal disk on the host(sun V880) because I didn't want them on the raid 5 disk on the sam do to the heavy writes. Well, those internal disks were a huge bottleneck during some load tests for our datawarehouse(they are fibre channel on the new sun fire v880's), so we moved them to the SAN and it tripled the performance. Go figure.
