Good Article Dennis, and I am living proof that you CAN get a technical book contract even in a soft market.

Rachel is right... isn't easy (I knew you were, Rachel, but I am doing it anyway... it is still THE book that I wish I had in my hands a year ago). I'm hoping to nearly pay off my trip to Rat World in the long run, but that isn't the reason.

Anyone thinking they have the perfect book idea... pitch the idea. You might just be surprised.

I've been saying all along that writing technical books is NOT the way to early retirement :)

I've done both authorship and technical editing. Both have advantages, both were done for several reasons, none of which included riches. In the case of the authorship, I wanted to help spread knowledge and make it easier for people to learn, so they wouldn't have to go through the painful self-taught process I had done.

Both authorship and technical editing were easy ways for me to learn new stuff. I learn much better if I have a definite goal.
