Actually for recovery of the control file, you have to be in nomount mode. RMAN will connect to a database as long as the instance is up. So, to recover
from square one you need to get the instance runninng. In 9i, it's generally

possible to start an instance without even a parameter file, which is nice. Then
you can recover the SPFILE and the control file from the autobackup.

One question, don't you have to have the database in no mount state to recover the controlfile in 8i? You do in 8.0.x.
