RMAN datafile allocation to channels

Does anyone know how RMAN decides which data files get backed up by which channels. I'm backing up to disk and have 4 channels, each to a separate disk drive. The data files seem to get assigned to channels at random. Also, this is a version 8.0.5 database (Ugggg).
