Jay - The book that really did it for me is:

    Oracle Backup & Recovery 101
    Kenny Smith and Stephan Haisley

Nearly half is devoted to RMAN. He has you create some small test databases, then back them up, crash them, and have RMAN restore them. I loved it.

Robert Freeman who participates frequently on this list has a book coming out soon. Everything Robert does is great, so I'm looking forward to this one. I understand that will be a little more advanced.

You must have a copy of the Oracle RMAN Pocket Reference at your elbow. At only $13, it is a steal. Jonathan Gennick who participates on this list edited it.

Since you mentioned your tape backup, one good piece of advice I received was to start slow with RMAN and back up to disk. That was very helpful, but some of the smarter people on this list were able to master RMAN going directly to a media manager.

Having abandoned any hope of getting approval for a training course I was wondering if I should just rely on the docs to teach myself RMAN or if there were any really good books out there that I should consult as well.

Since I'm on my 4th day of waiting for some files to be restored from our Solstice tape backup I decided it's time to bite the bullet.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jay Miller
