I don't have any "gotchas" but some tidbits AFAIK.

You'll need the SQLJ, JDBC drivers, and JDK running machine used for development and your 8i running the JServer option as well Net8 or above.

You'll be stuck with JDK 1.2.X as it is the common JDK supported by 8.17 and 9i versions of SQLJ.
