We had a similiar experience here. I would say that only 10% of the users are really using PowerPlay to its full potential. It requires:

1) a person with analytical skills
2) a person with a very good understanding of the data
3) a person that has time to "play" with the data.

Most of the other users bring up canned PowerPlay reports, and tweak a dimension or two. Very few of them build their own reports and drill deep down into the data. I still think it is a great tool. I setup an cube based on the concurrent requests in our Oracle Financial system. I can find bottlenecks in the concurrent managers, see who submits the most intensive reports, etc.

The original selling point was that everybody would be able to quickly and easily create their own reports, with the users accessing our production databases. How wrong that was.

What we have now is a central database (we call it a datawarehouse) that houses snapshots and custom reporting tables. All reports are basically canned, and we have a staff member who function is to maintain/build reports and the warehouse. At some point I am sure that users will be able to create their own reports, but from our datawarehouse, not production.

Anybody have any experience with "Cognos"? We've got a bhb that thinks its the solution for giving every end user access to the raw data (groan...loudly!)... I've argued every which-a-way against the concept, now I have to fight the specifics....
