QUERY OPTION in export

Hi
I want to use query option with export.When i run following command i get error
exp userid=test/passwd tables=table1 query=\"where initial_date\>'01-jan-02\'"
It doen't work and show error
if i run

exp userid=test/passwd tables=table1 query=\"where id\>10830979\" work for me fine.
Let me know how to put condition on date column qith query option in export? Thx
