Basically separating data and indexes is a special case of separating disparate IO operations to achieve sensible load balancing across your IO subsystem.

Its a little obsolete - basically being a throwback to the days when Oracle did nested loops and not much else. Nowadays, with operations that could be parallel, fast full scans, index joins, etc etc, it could be a more complicated exercise.

Unless you're in a high end environment, a reasonable compromise is spreading all the database across one or more stripe sets.
