I do(did, when i cared deeply) both....read like a book most of
the concepts....parts of the admin....the rest gets dipped into
just as you described.
Lot's of dipping, oh yea.

don't know about you, but I'd be bored to tears and not retain anything
if I read the manuals straight through.
I read the "new features", the "concepts" and then go merrily digging
and following links as I need new stuff.... works best for me
