As strange as it sounds, it might be that your hosting service does not understand that the Oracle backups obtained in this way are useless. On the other hand, this may be their way of getting copies of static files because they have tapes to burn.

we have 2 AIX servers at a remote hosting location. The host managers insist on doing volume group backups once a month, for all volumes on each server.

Why would they insist on doing this?

What purpose would these volume backups serve in a recovery situation?
