Just a bit more to check:

make sure that the OS on the test system is the same as the one the production server was -- this includes all OS patches.

Do the same for Oracle as well.

I have always "cloned" databases to new servers this way:

  1. ensure the OS is the same level as the one I am cloning
  2. copy all Oracle binary directories
  3. shutdown the database I want to copy (in Saroj's case this is, unfortunately, not necessary)
  4. copy all the relevant database files -- init.ora, tnsnames. ora, config.ora, redo logs, controlfiles, datafiles, anything else I can think of files

startup the database.

This is on Unix only, I've never done this on NT. I've never had a problem either. This method was actually suggested to me by Oracle Support. It's a quick and not-so-dirty way to install Oracle as well
