Hi Fred Fred 1,

The controlfiles will know about these actions immediately. Convince yourself by adding a tablespace or datafile, and issuing 'ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO TRACE' command. Check it out - your new objects
(datafile or tablespace) will be there.

There are few occasions when you will need to recreate your control file. Upping MAXDATAFILES, or any of the other parameters that are hard-coded at database creation, or the unfortunate problem of losing ALL your control files... I can't think of any other reasons why you would have to do this off the top of my head. I've had both of these happen. Bear in mind a full database backup is prudent when recreating the controlfile.

Hi List,

I want to konw when I need to re-create my control files. If I add a tablespace to my database or add a datafile to one of my existing tablespaces do I need to re-create my controlfiles ... or are they automatically updated to reflect the change to my database structure???

I know I need multiple copies of the control file on different spindles, etc.,... but I want to make sure that they are up to date. (I just added a new tablespace to my database).

Thank you!!!!
  -Fred Smith
