It would seem to me that the question is "do you ever re-create them?". For which the answer is "not unless you've had a disaster". The DB will maintain these files automatically & you should have more than one, on separate spindles.  In reality I can't think of anything worse happening that the control file(s) getting trashed. There is a lot of important information in there for recovery purposes and the DB is likely to continue running for a time before it notices that things have been trashed after which your in for a couple hours of work.

Been there, did that (created a new DB on the same machine with a copy of the init.ora file, OOPS did not change the control files, did I mention that this was an active production instance), still have the scars on the back end.

They will be updated whenever you add or drop data files and or log files. There is not a need to recreate them.

Hi List,

I want to konw when I need to re-create my control files. If I add a tablespace to my database or add a datafile to one of my existing tablespaces do I need to re-create my controlfiles ... or are they automatically updated to reflect the change to my database structure???

I know I need multiple copies of the control file on different spindles, etc.,... but I want to make sure that they are up to date. (I just added a new tablespace to my database).

Thank you!!!!
